How to Tile a Backsplash

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

We are updating our laundry room and what better way to be a little *fancy* than to add a backsplash. This method took us 4 hours from start to finish! It also was significantly easier and way less messy than traditional tile jobs.

Prepping the Canvas: A Dance of Drywall and Mussel Bound Magic

Our laundry room journey begins with a dash of prep work. We decided to kick things off by bidding farewell to the old countertop, which left a mark or two on the drywall. But fear not, for the magical Mussel Bound has our backs (and walls). With this nifty double-sided sticker designed for tiling, imperfections become a thing of the past. No more stressing about flawless walls, my friends! Just a bit of priming and patching, and we were good to go. Oh, and if you're curious about our drywall repair prowess, head over to our Instagram for a step-by-step tutorial that'll make you the ultimate drywall whisperer.

Here is the drywall prepped and ready to go! You can see where there shelves which we patched and primed. Also, make sure that you install countertops before the backsplash!

The Marvelous Mussel Bound: A Sticky Situation of Success Now, here comes the fun part! Enter Mussel Bound, our tiling superhero. It's like a double-sided tape that's been hitting the gym – super sticky and ready for action. To get this show on the road, you simply apply the adhesive side down, trim it to perfection with scissors or a razor blade, and when you're ready to unleash the tiles, peel off the top layer and stick 'em on. Quick, easy, and oh-so-satisfying.

And let's not forget the perks of this Mussel Bound marvel:

  • Flash-like installation speed

  • Virtually mess-free (say goodbye to gloopy mortar!)

  • Instant grout gratification – no waiting around for drying time

But hey, every hero has its Achilles' heel, right? The cons:

  • It might pinch your pocket a bit at $35 per roll

  • Once it's stuck, it's stuck for life (well, almost)

  • Sorry, shower enthusiasts, but this one's not for you – no wet and wild tile adventures allowed!

Trimming in Style and Tiling with Finesse With our tile journey coming to a stunning halt at the counter's edge, we needed a sleek trim piece to bring it all together. Hello, metal trim, our stylish savior! This little gem gets cozy with the Mussel Bound, making sure our tiling extravaganza stays put. Tiles, snappers, and wet saws – oh my! Our tile installation toolkit was ready for action. Half pieces met their fate with the tile snapper, while the wet tile saw handled the tricky maneuvers. But remember, if you're team Mussel Bound, make sure your tiles are bone-dry before they get the sticker treatment.

Grouting Glory: From Wet Mess to Dazzling Dress Time to seal the deal with grout, DIY darlings! We whipped up our own concoction and applied it with a tile float, like artists with brushes in hand. After a short 20-minute waiting game, a damp sponge danced across the tiles, wiping away grout excess and revealing the gleaming surface beneath. A few rounds of this dance, and voilà – our tiles were gleaming like a Broadway star in the spotlight.

The Big Reveal: Hello, Laundry Room Royalty! Drumroll, please… And there you have it, the grand after! Our laundry room has undergone a spectacular transformation, thanks to the Bedrosians Cloe White Subway tiles at $9.69 per square foot. The Avalanche Grout Mix from Lowe's ($15) brought all the tiles together in perfect harmony. And of course, our trusty Mussel Bound adhesive ($35/roll) played a starring role in this magical makeover.

So, there you have it, fellow DIY dreamers – a laundry room journey that went from drab to fab in just four hours. Who knew a backsplash update could be so quick, easy, and glamorous? Until next time, may your spaces be stylish, your projects be fabulous, and your imagination run wild with DIY wonders!
